Patternarium is IOU's light installation at Eureka's new Spark Gallery, running from December 1st through to next summer.
It's an immersive and mesmerising light and sound experience for the whole family
IOU will be taking over 2 floors of the the Spark Gallery. On one floor you'll find, Patternarium, an interactive play area where children can explore patterns by operating or manipulating any of the seven intriguing machines that reveal the hidden universe of patterns that surround us. Inspired by Volatile Light, one of IOU's previous creations, the Patternarium encourages a playful and analytical approach to discovering the world around us.
The lower floor will host the exhibition Volatile Light, a mechanical light and sound environment. Featuring an array of specially made machines, LED lights will be attached to rotating arms, levers and cranks to weave a series of eccentric curves, sweeping arcs and hectic scribbles in the darkened gallery space. Utilising an innovative combination of computer software, the lights will then be transformed in a separate viewing space into to a complex mixture of overlapping light trails and patterns. Audiences will experience an intimate, all enveloping combination of light and sound by placing themselves at the centre of a miniature, wrap around universe of moving lights and sounds.
Volatile Light and Patternarium are a perfect combination of activities for STEAM educational approach to learning, using all five components: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
