IOU connected school children at Xin Li School in Beijing with those at Wood Green School in Oxford using video QQ (the Chinese version of msn). The children used online translation software to discuss day to day life through chat while being able to see each other via video. Even though the online translation often gave odd or nonsensical translations, the children were able to communicate very successfully using both English and Chinese characters. With an emphasis on effective communication and understanding, rather than correct grammar and syntax, the project aimed to build confidence in communicating with those with whom you do not share a language – or an alphabet!
世界日欢迎您!
是为了庆祝世界各地不同的多元文化,
以及让不同的人们之间相互了解!
让我们看看我们每天的生活是什么样子。
让我们想一想我们有多少共同的地方, 以及我们不同的地方!
更重要的让我们看看与世界各地的人交朋友是多么容易的!
即使我们使用不一样的语言。
好,就让我们从谈论我们的食物开吧······
Welcome to World Day! This is a celebration of different cultures – and a way to find out more about each other! We can explore how we live our daily lives. We can think about what we have in common – and what makes us different! Also think about how easy it is to connect with friends across the world and how it is possible to communicate without sharing the same language. Let’s start by chatting about food…..
