IOU is a producing arts organisation based at Dean Clough in Halifax. We have over 40 years’ experience making live shows and contemporary art installations that combine many art forms together with new and innovative technology. All aspects of the work are originated by the company and are devised for unusual indoor and outdoor locations as well as established touring venues and galleries.
Led by one of the original founder members, David Wheeler, IOU has excited and delighted diverse audiences all over Europe. Our work is created by teams drawn from an international pool of professional artists, makers, performers, poets, musicians and technicians who have a range of experience working with the company - from founder members, new collaborators to recent graduates. Executive Director Joanne Wain, a highly experienced Producer and Arts Manager, joined the company in 2014.
We support the development of independent artists’ creative practice and offer opportunities to emerging artists (regionally and nationally) across a range of disciplines to develop their ideas, creative and professional skills. We also deliver a learning and participation programme to the local community, schools and families.
IOU has successfully secured major funding from the Arts Council of England and principal sponsors to develop our existing studio, exhibition and administrative base to a single, accessible, creation space within Dean Clough, Halifax.
IOU’s new creation space includes a studio suitable for producing large scale work, 3 flexible exhibition galleries for public access, with further plans to develop a new Learning and Participation Centre for audiences to engage with us on a deeper level. All these spaces function as a base for the development of an IOU Art School and will house an accessible, historically important archive of IOU’s rich legacy of work.
